A Self-Love Activity to Do With Your Child: The 'I Love You Because...' Colouring Card

Teaching a child about self-worth doesn't happen through one big conversation - it happens in small, repeated moments. One of the easiest ways in is something they already love to do: colouring.

This is a simple activity you can do together in about 15 minutes, with nothing more than crayons or felt tips and a bit of paper.

What you'll need

  • Paper (or a printable colouring page, if you have one)
  • Crayons, felt tips, or coloured pencils
  • 10-15 minutes, side by side

How to do it together

  1. Draw a simple heart or card outline on the paper - it doesn't need to be neat, and letting your child see you draw imperfectly is part of the lesson.
  2. Write "I love you because..." at the top, and take turns finishing the sentence - you finishing it about them, and them finishing it about you or themselves. Let them lead if they want to say something silly ("I love you because you make good pancakes" counts).
  3. Colour it in together, chatting as you go rather than treating it as a quiet task. Most of the real connection happens here - in the sitting-together part, not the finished card.
  4. Let them keep it somewhere they can see it - on a fridge, a bedroom wall, a mirror - as a small, visible reminder that they are loved exactly as they are.

There's no right way to do this, and it doesn't need to be perfect to work. What matters is the time together and the words said out loud.
